How to send different apps to different speakers on Mac

Music on the speakers, the call in your headset — each app on the output you choose.

Short answer

macOS sends all sound to one output at a time. MacFixes lets you pick an output for each app.

What macOS gives you

You choose one output for the whole Mac in Control Center or System Settings → Sound. Some apps, like video-call apps, let you pick their own speaker in their settings, but most can’t, and there’s nowhere to set it for every app at once.

How MacFixes fixes it

  1. 1
    Add the fix
Open MacFixes Settings → Sound and add “Output per app”. Fixes are off until you add them.
  2. 2
    Allow audio once
macOS asks once for permission to capture system audio, which is how MacFixes routes each app.
  3. 3
    Pick an output per app
Choose where each app plays in MacFixes Settings → Sound. MacFixes remembers it for that app.

Questions

Can macOS play to two outputs at once?

With Audio MIDI Setup you can build a “Multi-Output Device” that plays everything everywhere. That’s different from choosing an output per app, which macOS doesn’t offer.

Does it remember my choice?

Yes, per app, so the next time that app plays it goes to the same place.
