How to stop ⌘Q quitting apps by accident on Mac
⌘Q sits right next to ⌘W and ⌘Tab. One slip and the whole app is gone. Make it hold-to-quit instead.
Short answer
macOS quits instantly on ⌘Q. MacFixes makes you hold it for a moment first, with a progress ring, so a tap does nothing.
What macOS gives you
Most apps quit the moment you press ⌘Q. A few browsers have their own “warn before quitting” setting. You can also give one app’s Quit command a different shortcut in System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → App Shortcuts, typing its exact menu name, one app at a time. There’s no system-wide option.
How MacFixes fixes it
- 1Add the fixOpen MacFixes Settings → Windows and add “Quit protection”. Fixes are off until you add them.
- 2Allow AccessibilitymacOS asks for Accessibility permission so MacFixes can catch ⌘Q before the app does.
- 3Hold to quitA quick ⌘Q now does nothing. Hold it and a ring fills; when it’s full, the app quits.
This is one of 28 fixes in MacFixes.

Questions
Can I exclude an app?
Yes. Apps on the exception list quit on ⌘Q as normal.
