How to snap windows on Mac

Drag a window to an edge, or press a shortcut, to fill a half, a third or a corner.

Short answer

macOS 15 Sequoia added tiling to halves, quarters and corners. MacFixes adds thirds and a full set of shortcuts you can change, and works on macOS 14 too.

What macOS gives you

Since macOS 15 Sequoia you can drag a window to an edge or corner, use the green button’s layout menu, Window → Move & Resize, or shortcuts: Fn-Control-arrow for halves, Fn-Control-F for Fill, Fn-Control-R to restore. Corners have no shortcut and there are no thirds. Earlier versions offer only Split View in full screen.

How MacFixes fixes it

  1. 1
    Add the fix
Open MacFixes Settings → Windows and add “Window snapping”. Fixes are off until you add them.
  2. 2
    Allow Accessibility
macOS asks for Accessibility permission, which any app needs to move other apps’ windows.
  3. 3
    Drag or press
Drag a window to an edge or corner, or use ⌃⌥ with the arrow keys — ⌃⌥← for the left half, ⌃⌥↩ to fill the screen. Every shortcut can be changed.

Questions

Does it work alongside macOS tiling?

Yes. If you’d rather only one of them respond to a drag, turn off macOS’s own edge tiling in System Settings → Desktop & Dock.

Which shortcuts does it use?

Control-Option with the arrow keys for halves, ⌃⌥↩ to fill the screen and ⌃⌥⌫ to restore, plus shortcuts for thirds and moving to the next display — all changeable.
